Meet Deanna and Gene Weaver
Proceeds from this digital cookbook will go towards the WVU Cancer Institute in honor of Eugene and Deanna Weaver.
Deanna Asterino Weaver is the oldest daughter of Sam and Helen Pizatella Asterino, both deceased. She and all of the last five generations of her paternal and maternal progenitors were West Virginians, who migrated from the Region of Calabria in Italy. Siblings include Joseph Asterino, of Fairmont, West Virginia, Judy Asterino Lusher of Cleveland, Ohio, Barbara Asterino Skinner of Alexandria, Virginia, and John Asterino, deceased.
She married Lewis Eugene (Gene) Weaver of Fairmont, West Virginia, on September 23, 1961. They have one son, Chris Alan Weaver, married to Ladawn Holley. Chris and his ex-wife, Debra, have three daughters—Jessica Dawn and husband Sam Castillo; Lindsay Caitlin and husband John Britton; and Haley Alexis and husband Zack Orgill. Jessica and Sam have one daughter, Alexandra (Allie) Morgan, and two sons, Bruce Harding and Adrian Thomas. Lindsay and John have one son, Luke Alan and one daughter Claire Daisy. Haley and Zack have one son, Patrick Thomas. Gene and Deanna also have one daughter, Tracey Lynne Weaver. She has one daughter, Devin Paige Sears.
Deanna was born in Fairmont, West Virginia on April 22, 1941, attended Watson Elementary School, Fairmont Junior High School, and graduated Fairmont Senior High School in 1959. She graduated from Fairmont State College in 1972 with a degree in Elementary Education K-8, with a specialization in Social Studies. Graduating from West Virginia University in 1975 with a Masters’ Degree in Reading K-12, she also earned specializations in K-12 Reading Specialist, K-12 Supervision, Principalship, Vocational Administrator, and Superintendency.
She was employed by Taylor County Schools for a total of 28 years as an elementary classroom teacher, remedial reading teacher, reading specialist, curriculum coordinator, K-12 supervisor, and K-12 director of instruction. Concurrently, she was an adjunct professor at West Virginia University. After retiring from Taylor County Schools, she worked as a grant-writing consultant for several technology companies, including Lightspan, Plato Learning, and Leap Frog.
Gene was born in Fairmont, West Virginia on September 2, 1942. He was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, Fairmont State College, and West Virginia University. He spent ten years as a trainman with the B&O Railroad. In 1975 he began his career in education as a science teacher at Miller Junior High School and retired in 2002 as assistant principal at Fairmont Senior High School. At various times he served on the following boards: Marion County School Employees Federal Credit Union, Green Hills Country Club, and Pierpont C&TC Board of Governors.
Deanna and Gene both shared a passion for family history, great food, traveling, teaching and supporting friends and the community. They were always full of life, love, friends and family. They were also avid West Virginia University fans and followed the Mountaineers in both football and basketball.
Finally taking full retirement until her death, September 8th, 2015, Deanna lived at her home in Whitehall, WV. She spent her time with her husband and with their family, socializing with friends, cooking, traveling, and working on endless projects. Gene would carry on the many family traditions (including cooking Deanna's famous "Red Spaghetti Sauce"). He cared for Deanna's large collection of historical family photographs and continued to work on a new edition of the Heritage Cookbook until his death on April 9, 2020.
